The Edinburgh Lace Course is an annual event held at Heriot Watt University over 5 days in July. This year 68 lacemakers from all over the UK attended with tuition from 4 well known lace tutors – Kitty Mason, Carole Smith, Francis Bell and Claire Bonito. The tutors wil teach just about any type of lace but there was also a siginificant number of untutored lacemakers in attendance this year.
3 members of Bon Accord Bobbins attended this year with members from the Inverness, Nairn and Cullen groups also attending.
A huge variety of lace was being made over the week and the weather was good for the 10 minute +/- walk to and from the accommodation. The grounds at Heriot Watt are lovely for a walk. although the lure of a glass of wine in the “common room” often won out after dinner!
Roseground was the supplier – available on the Wednesday not only to the lacemekers on the course but also to the visitors who come along.
The theme for the display this year was “Space” and the winner ( based on the votes of the attendees) was Sarah from Inverness with her piece “The Dark Side of the Moon”
Next year’s theme is ” Marine” so plenty of time to get your fish/shells/ seaweed/ ship wrecks made before July next year.
The dates for the 2025 course are 21st – 25th July, but you need to be quick to book. The 2024 course was full in 3 days!!!
If you need further information about the course, contact the Edinburgh Lace Course through their website https://www.edinburghlacecourse.co.uk/ or speak to someone who has been.
